Introduction to CBD and Its Potential Uses

Hi, I’m Dr. Joe Nemeth, a periodontist in Southfield, Michigan. Today, I want to discuss an increasingly popular topic: CBD or CBD oil, also known as cannabidiol. Derived from either the marijuana plant or the hemp plant, CBD does not contain THC, the psychoactive ingredient responsible for the “high” associated with marijuana use.

Despite the absence of THC, CBD is often used for pain control and has been reported to offer a variety of potential health benefits, including seizure reduction in children and decreased anxiety levels. In today’s discussion, I will be focusing on the possible role of CBD in oral health, specifically regarding gum tissue.

A Study on the Effects of CBD on Gum Health

A study conducted using rats tested the potential benefits of CBD on oral health. The rats were divided into two groups: a control group that did not receive CBD and an experimental group that was given CBD.

The researchers induced gum disease or periodontal disease in the rats, utilizing wires that irritated gum tissue. The experimental group received CBD in the form of injections, and following a trial period, the results indicated a positive impact of CBD on gum health.

The rats in the experimental group, who were treated with CBD, experienced significantly less bone destruction, faster healing rates, and overall healthier gum tissue when compared to the control group that did not receive CBD.

The Role of CBD in Toothpaste

As CBD continues to gain popularity, several companies have now started incorporating it into toothpaste formulations. Unlike some strong toothpastes that contain antibacterial agents, which are capable of killing both good and bad bacteria, CBD-infused toothpaste does not destroy the good bacteria present in the mouth. Instead, it promotes the growth of good bacteria while minimizing the harmful effects of bad bacteria.

A Natural Anxiety Reducer

Another possible benefit of using CBD products is their potential to reduce anxiety levels. Individuals who experience anxiety before dental appointments might consider taking CBD oil or other CBD-containing products to alleviate their concerns. In many dental practices, like mine, we strive to ensure a pain-free and stress-less experience, but utilizing a natural anxiety reducer like CBD could prove comforting for some patients.

A Word of Caution: Marijuana vs. CBD

While CBD and CBD oil may offer potential oral health benefits, it’s important to differentiate them from smoking marijuana. In a future video, I intend to cover this topic in more detail, but it’s worth noting that smoking marijuana can be harmful to gum tissue. The smoke from marijuana can dry out the gum tissue and even reduce blood supply.

This is in stark contrast to CBD products, which do not contain THC and may offer some therapeutic benefits. Keep in mind that the jury is still out to determine CBD’s full range of effects, however, anecdotal evidence and preliminary research seems promising.

Conclusion: A Healthy Mouth Leads to a Healthier Body

While more research is needed to conclusively determine the efficacy of CBD and CBD oil for oral health, there is growing interest in the potential benefits it may provide. Incorporating CBD into toothpaste formulations or using it as an anxiety reducer before dental appointments are just a couple of examples of how this natural compound might contribute to maintaining a healthy mouth.
